The NeutraWeed project was recently featured in an article in the Italian magazine AgroNotizie, highlighting the innovative concept of neutral weed communities and their potential for more sustainable weed management.

In the interview, Dr Marco Esposito, project coordinator and scientific responsible, explains that some weed communities can coexist with crops without significantly reducing yields and quality compared to weed-free conditions.
Instead of eliminating all spontaneous vegetation, the concept of Neutral Weed Communities focuses on understanding ecological interactions within agroecosystems and on managing weeds more selectively and sustainably.
The NeutraWeed project (Understanding Neutral Weed Communities-Crops Interactions and Identification of Artificial Intelligence Algorithms for Species-Specific Weed Management using Robots) brings together 15 partner organisations from Europe, the United States, China, Kenya, and Argentina.
The project aims to combine ecological, physiological, and microbiological research with artificial intelligence and robotic technologies to identify Neutral Weed Communities (that are crop-specific) in different regions of the world and selectively remove only the most competitive weed species, allowing neutral weed communities to develop.
By integrating ecological knowledge with advanced technologies, NeutraWeed seeks to reduce reliance on herbicides and intensive soil disturbance while maintaining crop productivity.
