Prof. Camilla Moonen from Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies (Italy) presented the NeutraWeed project at the 20th European Weed Research Society Symposium, held from 1–4 July 2025 in Lleida, Catalonia (Spain).

The event, themed "Joint Approaches for Sustainable Weed Management", brought together researchers from across Europe and beyond to explore innovative strategies for balancing crop productivity with sustainability.

The EWRS Symposium, hosted for the first time in Spain, highlighted new advances in weed science oriented towards achieving a balance between crop production and sustainability. Organized by a local committee from the University of Lleida and the Agrotecnio Centre, with support from regional institutions, the symposium served as a platform for sharing cutting-edge research and building collaborations.

During her presentation, Prof. Moonen introduced NeutraWeed, a Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions project that explores the potential of artificial intelligence and robotics in promoting neutral weed communities — communities that coexist with crops without harming crop yields and quality. The project, coordinated by the Sant’Anna School with Marco Esposito as Project Coordinator, involves a global network of 15 partners working to develop new sustainable approaches for weed management.
